Earlier this morning, fans from around the world flocked to Nevada for the annual Game of Thrones convention, where showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss sat down to answer all sorts of questions about the popular series.
The mood in the audience turned dark, however, after a group of fans repeatedly asked D.B. and David if any major characters would be biting the bullet in the upcoming season.
“We don’t normally like to answer these sorts of questions,” D.B. responded to the crowd.
“Because if we give too much or too little information, it could negatively impact the franchise, and that’s something we obviously don’t want to happen.”
“But since you’ve been such a fantastic audience today, I think we’ll give you a little taste of things to come.”
“To give you the short answer, yes, a major character will be dying in this season of Game of Thrones,” David announced to the audience.
“But it’s Game of Thrones, right? And major characters die all the time, so obviously we’re going to be doing something differently this time around.”
“Remember the red wedding? Well picture that, but then multiply it by 10. That’s a pretty good idea of what to expect in Season 6.”
Game of Thrones is known for pushing the boundaries when it comes to killing off characters, and according to D.B. and David, Season 6 won’t be pulling any punches.
“Not only will there be a bunch of major characters dying, we’re also going to kill off at least one fan favorite,” D.B. told fans while trying to hold back laughter.
“Oh, and we’re not talking about Jon Snow, either. We’re (probably) going to keep him alive for a little bit longer just to mess with you.”
When fans demanded to know which of their beloved characters was going to be killed off, D.B. and David looked at each other, laughed, and then replied.
“Look, obviously we’re not going to tell you which character dies, as that would be bad for business,” David replied with a grin.
“What we do is, we go through online polls and find the characters that you guys like the most, and then we put their names into a hat and pull out a random character.”
“That’s how we decide who to kill.”
According to current internet polls, the most popular Game of Thrones characters are, in this order; Tyrion Lannister, Arya Stark, Jon Snow, and Daenerys Targaryen.
If D.B. and David are to believed, and we think they are, then fans should expect to see one of those characters die in the next season of Game of Thrones.
All we can do now is wait, and hope that it’s Cersei instead.
