Facebook can be a very weird and confusing place sometimes, and the group, aptly named “Simpsons Shitposting”, is the perfect example of this.
The group, which has amassed a substantial 135,000 members, is all about two things; The Simpsons, and Shitposting (and sometimes a combination of the two).
On the surface, it’s easy to dismiss this group as just another one of those “weird” Facebook pages. You know, the type Daily Dot talked about in their article on memes way back in 2014.
But if you dig a little deeper, things start to get… weirder. Here’s an example of what I mean:
This image has combined Pulp Fiction – a 90’s movie glorifying drugs, violence, and gangs – with The Simpsons in a way that only people who have watched both will understand.
800+ likes, 16 shares, and hundreds upon hundreds of comments, all saying the same things: “delet this”, “yes”, “steamed hams”, “stupid sexy flanders”, etc.
“Whatever,” you might think, “It’s just a harmless image on the Internet, and they’re just kids having fun, who cares?”
And, had I not spent the last 6 hours trawling through the deepest, darkest depths of this group, I might have agreed that it was just a case of Internet pranksters having a good time with their meme loving friends.
But then I saw this:
This is lyrics from The Killers hit song ‘Mr Brightside’ plastered over the top of still images from The Simpsons. That’s all it is. Yet it’s managed to gain over 2000 likes, 400 shares, and at the time of writing, has hundreds of comments.
Comments that are all saying the same, fucking, things: “delete this”, “yes”, “steamed hams”.
Look, I’m not some generation X’er who’s too old to get this stuff, either. I’m only 24. But even I can see that this shit doesn’t make sense. It’s not funny, and to be honest, it’s kind of freaking me out a little bit.
Here’s another “quality” shitpost:
What does this even mean? Moe’s head is on Marge’s body, and the clock says 4:11. Is this number significant? Is that why Marge starts dancing?
What the FUCK is happening in this image? It makes no sense, it isn’t funny, and the only people who could think it was funny are people who have been brainwashed.
Is that what’s going on here? You join the group as a normal, innocent person, but after being exposed to the weirdness it only takes a few days before you’re shouting “delet this” and posting pictures of lemons with the rest of them.
